Touch Panels: Projected Capacitive vs. Resistive

Projected Capacitive Touchscreen

Resistive Touchscreen

What is a Projected Capacitive Touch Panel?

What is a Resistive Touch Panel?

A capacitive touch panel is one which consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO). As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the panel results in a distortion of the panel's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance.

Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location is then sent to the controller for processing.

Resistive touch panels are composed of two flexible sheets coated with a resistive material and separated by an air gap or microdots. When contact is made to the surface of the touchpanel, the two sheets are pressed together. On these two sheets there are horizontal and vertical lines that when pushed together, register the precise location of the touch.

Because the touchpanel senses input from contact with nearly any object (finger, stylus/pen, palm) resistive touch panels are a type of "passive" technology.

Pros:

Pros:

  • Low activation force (highly touch sensitive)

  • Multitouch technology

  • Durable due to glass top layer

  • Infinity edge design (no bezel required)

  • Long lifetime - up to 100 million touches

  • FEMA integrated the touch controller IC on flex

  • Finger pressure, thick gloved hand Ok

  • Stylus ok

  • Cost effective

  • Cons:

    Cons:

  • Will not work if wearing thick gloves

  • Will not work with ordinary stylus

  • No integrated controller on flex

  • Single touch only

  • More vulnerable to scratches

  • Shorter lifetime - up to 10 million touches only

  • Other Features of Projected Capacitive Touch Panel

Other Features of Resistive Touch Panel

    High Resolution and Fast Response

    • Resolution: 1024 x 1024 and up

    • Sampling Rate: 50 times per second

    High Transparency and High Safety

    • FEMA uses multiple layers of glass with optical lamination in assembly process. This makes the touch screen the same toughness as tempered glass which could stand against shock and impact. Even it was shattered by shock, the glass would still stick to the optical adhesion and not break into pieces as normal glass would.

Hand Gesture and Multiple Points Touch

    • Embedded with high performance IC, users can enlarge, shrink, rotate, flip and drag pages easily.

    Flexible in Design

    • The touch screen design can be paired with housing design from the customers to cover their lens or replace the physical buttons on its original module. FEMA is also capable of doing the customized shape needed to pair with customer's mechanical design.

Short Development Time & Low Development Cost

    • With the assistance of the simulation software, equipment with high accuracy and simplifying assembly process, FEMA is capable of making the sample in shorter period and with lower development charge.

    Stability and Reliability

    • The 5-wire resistive touch panel uses the stable bottom layer for both X- and Y- axis measurements.

    • Top ITO PET acts only as a voltage-measuring probe. Touch panel works properly even with non-uniformity or scratches in the coversheet's conductive coating.

    • With the advantages of high temperature process, products are optimized in material, structure and production; they are assured to have extraordinary stability, durability and reliability in electrical, mechanical, optical performance.

    Touch Sensitivity

    • Touch may be activated by finger, nail, stylus, credit card, key or gloved hand. It is not affected by dirt, dust, water or chemical solvents.

    Flexible in Design

    • Capable of providing sizes from 2.5” to 23”, 0" aspect ratio, and slim perimeter products. To overcome the weaknesses in abrasion and sunlight readability. Can supply Glass/Glass and Circular Polarized resistive touch panels to meet specific requirements.
